PVCC Political Club debates the issues bi-weekly
Every other Monday at 12:20 p.m. an intriguing group of people gets together to discuss various political issues. Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Political Club meets in room M161 in the hopes of sharing political ideas and opinions.
“Every week we choose a different issue, sit around the table and discuss it,” said Connie Jorgensen, government professor at PVCC. Club members receive an e-mail explaining the topic several days beforehand in order to adequately prepare for the discussion.
The Political Club aspires to provide a relaxed and welcoming environment. “We try to meet as civilly as possible, hear each other’s opinions and learn from one another,” said Jorgensen. Members attend club meetings in the hopes of having an intelligent discussion, something that is typically easy to achieve.
The club is unique because “it’s a group of people who want to discuss the issues of the day,” said Jorgensen. She views the Political Club as an excellent opportunity to discuss events and connect them to each member’s life.
The Political Club allows its members to “meet interesting people, talk about interesting ideas and get more familiar with what is going on out here in the world,” said Jorgensen. It also serves as an opportunity to “hear other people’s opinions, therefore broaden your own scope of opinion, and it’s just fun.”
Anyone may attend a meeting, and the current members encourage anyone remotely interested in politics to visit. For more information, students can contact Connie Jorgensen at cjorgensen@pvcc.edu.
