Renowned Balalaika orchestra to play at Dickinson
The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra will soon be gracing the Main Stage of the V. Early Dickinson Building, bringing culture and a unique style of music to PVCC. The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra was founded because of a strong interest in studying and performing the music of Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe on traditional folk instruments – the balalaika, domra, bayan, and related folk wind and percussion instruments.
According to Charles Winkler, a 20-year member of the orchestra and principle Second Primadomra, “The orchestra has many traditional percussion and woodwind instruments, along with a variety of traditional Russian folk instruments. Many people who play the traditional instruments once played violin, guitar, mandolin, or another classic instrument.” Winkler went on to say that the orchestra performs 12 or more times a year, and has played at Carnegie Hall and for the Russian Embassy.
When asked about the choice for Dickinson as a venue, Winkler said, “PVCC has the best acoustics in Charlottesville.”
On Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012 at 3 p.m. the orchestra will provide a family friendly afternoon of culture and Russian folk heritage. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
Free student vouchers, however, are available with a valid PVCC Student ID at the receptionist desk at the South Entrance of the Main Building, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. A student voucher can be exchanged for tickets at the PVCC Box Office two hours before the start of each show.
