PVCC Gallery Opens New Exhibit Nov. 21
Charlottesville, Va. – Piedmont Virginia Community College opens two new art exhibits with a reception on Friday, Nov. 21, from 5-7 p.m. in the PVCC Gallery. 40 Years of Printmaking: A Mini-Retrospective of the Work of Frederick Nichols features several of the local artist’s prints. Light Years: Let There Be Light 2007-13 includes documentary photographs of Let There Be Light, PVCC’s annual night of outdoor light-centered artworks. The shows run Nov. 21 through Jan. 7, 2015.
Nichols is inspired by the beauty and light of the Virginia countryside. From his studio in Barboursville, he creates paintings depicting picturesque landscapes, “an interpretation of a moment and a mood in time,” and then crafts multiples of the images using the silk screening process to produce a rich color unobtainable in other methods. His works have been widely shown across the East Coast and internationally including Italy, Japan, Uzbekistan and the Island Republic of Madagascar.
Light Years: Let There Be Light 2007-13 features images from PVCC’s most popular visual art event. The photographs offer a chance to revisit art installations from Let There Be Light since its inception 7 years ago. Beryl Solla, professor of art at the College and curator of this exhibition, described the show’s content as “beautiful and startling images that capture both the spirit and the magic of the event.”
Contributors include Bud Branch, Mark Edwards, Stacey Evans, Rosita Gonzalez, Chelsea Heil, Sharon Barrett Kennedy, Will May, Rick Stillings and James Yates, curator of the Let There Be Light event.
Light Years: Let There Be Light 2007-13 will be on display during Let There Be Light Friday, Dec. 12, from 6-9 p.m. In case of rain, the exhibition will take place Saturday, Dec. 13, from 6-9 p.m.
The PVCC Gallery, located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, is open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The PVCC Gallery will be closed for winter break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, 2015.
