Balloons Charlottesville, Va. – Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Visual Arts Department presents Let There Be Light, an evening of light-centered artworks and performances illuminating the outdoors for one night only Friday, Dec. 12, from 6-9 p.m. The exhibit is generously sponsored by CenturyLink* and will be held on the Main Campus grounds surrounding the V. Earl Dickinson Building. The public is invited free of charge. Hot chocolate, warm cider and other refreshments will be provided.

This popular event features art installations and performances that incorporate light to celebrate the approach of Winter Solstice, historically the longest night of the year. This eighth annual Let There Be Light brings together twenty-seven local and regional artists, the largest number ever to take part in the event, along with an artist who will be participating electronically from Nepal.

Let There Be Light is curated by local artist James Yates, whose primary aim in his work is to “re-enchant our experience of the world.” Yates has recruited many of the area’s most innovative artists who work in a wide variety of mediums.  Examples of exhibits to be enjoyed include:
  • Mark Nizer, best known as a world champion juggler, will display an audio-visual exploration of video mapping, a projection technology used to turn objects- in this case a pyramid of cubes- into a display surface for video projection.
  • Chris Haske will collaborate with seven of his middle school students from Peabody School to present “Painting with Light,” an audience participation event using unique light tools the students created to imprint lines, shapes and patterns on photographs taken with a long exposure.
  • Fenella Belle, PVCC professor of art, will exhibit “Shadowland,” an interactive world of shadows and characters that visitors may manipulate and use to create stories.

Other artists featured include Allison Andrews, William Bennett, Tom Clarkson, Ted Coffey, Mark Edwards, Stacey Evans, Rose Guterbock, Jarn Heil, James Hopkins, Peter Krebs, Marianne Kubick, Megan Marlatt, Tim Michel, Aaron Miller, Lydia Moyer, Nancy Ross, Mark Schuyler, Matthew Slaats, Beryl Solla, Rick Stillings, Travis Thatcher, Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell, Visualabs (Kevin Cwalina, Will May and Jonah Tobias), and James Yates.

Visitors to tOrganumunagrohe exhibition are encouraged to bring a flashlight and come dressed as “enlightened beings,” decorating themselves with light to add to the festivities. In case of rain, the event will be held at the same time on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The Dickinson Building is located at the south end of College Drive and parking is located in front of the building.
