Compassion on Campus
PVCC’s police officers showed their compassionate side Thursday, Dec. 3 as they responded to an incident at the Charlottesville Area Transit bus stop near the Main Building. Shortly after 8:30 a.m., three officers exited the west entrance of the Main Building toward the (CTT) bus stop where a man lay apparently unconscious near the rock monument. On the scene were Chief Michael Wyatt, Safety Officer Whit Harrell and Officer Joseph Hood. According to Hood, the student tripped and hit his head as fell. Hood said he checked the student and told Wyatt to call for emergency medical service.
According to Hood, the student who alerted PVCC’s authorities stayed with the injured person until help arrived. Officer Hood was seen kneeling beside the man and trying to communicate with him. Wyatt, who had not yet changed into his uniform, took off his coat and placed it over the student as they waited for emergency medical services to arrive. Some students who arrived shortly after the incident stopped to make sure the person was alright before moving on. The officers secured the area around the injured student until medical services arrived.
Medical services arrived within 10 minutes of the incident, “which I was surprised about,” said Hood, and the student was taken to the hospital. According to Hood and Harrell, the young man did not sustain any serious injuries and he was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
