Charlottesville’s creative side is expressed through Fleaville

It was a scorching hot day and the sun beat down mercilessly on those who braved its rays. However, that did not stop Mary Mayo and the other shop owners who set up their merchandise at IX Park for Fleaville on Sept. 10, 2016.

Fleaville is the fun, quirky, and crafty side of a farmers market, where the food is replaced by unique knick-knacks and trinkets. Creative individuals, mostly from around Charlottesville and Richmond, come to show off and sell the merchandise they have made or collected.

Mary Mayo, owner of Top Cat Antiques, owns an antique shop in Ruckersville. For the three years that Fleaville has been around, she has been a vendor. She has collected antiques all her life and said, “I’m just passing on my treasures to someone else.”

Antiques are not the only thing that make an appearance at Fleaville. Lots of different styles of clothes can be found there, too. SuperFun Yoga Pants is a boutique that sells yoga pants printed in colorful fabrics and bold prints. At Fleaville, they even set up a tent to serve as a makeshift changing room.

Chickapig, a one of a kind board game that is slowly becoming more and more popular, was being sold. A variety of different styles of jewelry, pottery, and painted wooden signs could also be found at various shops.

Fleaville is open once a month during the summer. This year, you will also be able to check it out at Tomtoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 12 p.m.- 7 p.m. in Lee Park.
