Student Government Association News
At the end of every school year, the PVCC Student Government Association (SGA) elects seven new members to represent both the SGA and the student body as the SGA executive board. With the new school year beginning, it is time for these newly elected members to begin their work.
Waqas Al Mulhim is the new president for this academic year. According to the SGA constitution, the president is in charge of “representing the views and concerns of the Student Body to the College administration and the community, and for leading efforts to improve student life and resolve student grievances.” Al Mulhim said, “I am very excited to represent the Student body as the SGA president this year. I am also very excited to have more events that will help students academically, and help them to get engaged in the school’s community.”
Michael Apgar is excited to be the new vice president. According to the SGA constitution, Apgar’s job is to “coordinate the transition process and implement training procedures for new members, as well as assist the President in any or all of his/her duties, and assume the duties of the President in cases of absence, resignation, or impeachment.” Apgar said, “This year, I want to bring to life the ideas from our entire student body. We have a wide range of students here, and I hope to utilize this diversity to generate ideas that will better our college and enrich the lives of our students.”
Rain Sabin is the new executive senator. The constitution says that “The Executive Senator manages the SGA senators serving on the College Senate, meets with President of the College once a month with Executive College Senate to report SGA opinion of pertinent topics, and presides over necessary SGA senator submeetings.” Sabin said, that as the executive senator “I largely manage our committees.”
The director of events for this year is John Linkous. The constitution says that “The Director of Events shall lead and manage the Events Department, which organizes and runs SGA-hosted social events across the campus and the community.” Linkous said, “I’m really looking forward to the events this year and the amount of fun and excitement everyone will have from them on campus.”
The director of public relations this year is Skye Scott*. The constitution says, “[The] Director of Public Relations shall lead and manage the Public Relations Department, which develops and maintains SGA media, outreach, administration-specific polling, and appreciation processes.” Scott said, “I am excited to expand SGA social media outreach by increasing the use of our social media pages. I am also looking forward to advertising the events we will host this year.”
The new director of student voice is Cambria Kowalzik. According to the constitution, “The Director of Student Voice shall lead and manage the Student Voice Department, shall submit SGA-approved project proposals to the appropriate college staff, and shall communicate the results of projects to the SGA body.” Kowalzik said, “As the Director of Student Voice for the SGA, I endeavor to give everyone the opportunity to be heard; from ensuring member satisfaction within the SGA, to polling the student body for their opinions on the school. I aim to transform your ideas into working proposals that the SGA can then put forth to be reviewed by the school administration.”
Erin Sonnenburg is the returning SGA secretary. The constitution says that “The Secretary documents the actions of the SGA, manages general attendance records, and records general meeting minutes.” Sonnenburg said, “In the upcoming school year, I would like the SGA, as well the PVCC administration, to emphasize the importance & maintain a diverse and inclusive, academic community.”
