Joseph Shannon: student and teacher at PVCC
For the past few years, members of the Investment Club have strived to enhance their knowledge of investing, as well as build a stronger comprehension of the business world. In the Spring semester, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Investment Club President Joseph Shannon to discuss his role in the club.
Graduating from Mills Godwin High School in Richmond, 19-year-old Shannon has been the club leader for the past two semesters. As the younger brother of past club president Andrew Shannon, Joseph is no stranger to the world of investing.
“I had some pretty big shoes to fill,” said Shannon, “My brother did an outstanding job heading the Investment Club. I believe I have been able to continue the legacy by training our members in the same way he once trained me.”
The Investment Club holds its meetings every other Thursday in room M161.
“To start every meeting, I begin by giving a brief 20-30 minute lesson outlining current markets and the global economy, for the rest of the meeting we mainly discuss current events and receive member feedback.” said Shannon when asked about his responsibilities as club president.
Other than the lessons led by Shannon, the Investment Club likes to educate their members through a virtual investment game called Market Watch. With Market Watch, club members are able to trade stock in real-time as well as talk strategy and build their understanding of the stock market. To motivate the members, Shannon gives out cash prizes each month to the two highest earners.
After his time at PVCC, Shannon plans on applying to UVA’s McIntire school of commerce, where he hopes to reunite with his brother.
If you have any interest in the stock market, or simply want to understand how to invest your money, I encourage you to attend an Investment Club meeting.
