Helping Students Succeed at Life
The PVCC Student Success Office is full of advisers who are helpful, respectful, and kind people. The Student Success Office will help students with their educational and personal goals. Advisers at the student success office can help with any courses that students have trouble in or potential obstacles or barriers. The advisers provide encouragement and support throughout the student’s pursuit of their education.
An adviser job is about overcoming obstacles that can prevent a student’s development as an educated student and an individual. Advisers can also provide students with academic counseling. If a student gets an academic warning, that is because the student received a failing grade in any courses or has earned a below 2.0 GPA. The student will receive notice that they have finished the semester with an academic warning. This cannot negatively impact the financial aid they receive, but the student has to speak to an adviser at the Student Success Office.
If a student has more than 12 GPA credits and has less than a 1.5 GPA it will mean an academic probation. The student will receive a letter and has to meet with the student success advisers to register for the following semesters. If the student’s financial aid is lost, the student may be able to get it back again in the next semester after they improve their grades. The academic warning impacts students’ financial aid but when a student has an academic probation on the transcript, the student needs to go to the student success office, talk to the student’s adviser, and make a plan. The student needs to make a weekly planner and go to the Student Success Office every month in the semester to talk and to plan for the coming semesters.
If a student is considering dropping courses, they need to come to the student success office to talk to the advisor. The office may know some resources that can help the student make an important decision. In some cases, students withdrawing from their courses is a good thing, so the students have to come to the student success office to speak with an adviser, and the adviser will help evaluate their options. If the student failed a class or received a low grade on the class, the student needs to speak to an adviser as soon as possible. The student can repeat the class to replace the old grade in the GPA, and that’s always the best option.
Adviser Debbie Ashby said, “The PVCC Student Success Office can help students in different ways. Mostly we work with students who are struggling academically to find ways to reach success whatever that means to them. We listen and provide suggestions for support through the college.” Student Success Office advisers can also help students make appointments. The Student Success Office can help you make appointments for the Tutoring Center, Writing Center and more.
