Catfish at the Crescent
The Crescent Inn is a small family restaurant located in Zion Crossroads, Virginia, that has been a staple of the community for many years. It has warm and friendly staff, comfortable seating, and fantastic food complete with the atmosphere of a 1950s diner. Many new establishments have since arisen, and the historic inn from which the restaurant derives its name no longer stands. The Crescent Inn, however, remains one of the most popular locations in the area, as it has since 1956, and for good reason.
A prospective client walking through the front doors will be greeted by someone who serves as hostess and waitress for the whole establishment. While one might think that the service would be slow as a result, this is not the case. The diner will seat themselves and be approached for a drink order quickly. The clientele is distinctly rural, and country music plays softly in the background. Like most Southern restaurants, breakfast is served all day and regarded as the premier item on the menu. While I would usually avail myself of that option, after perusing the menu I decided to try the catfish this time instead.
The plate was placed before me, and I knew if it tasted half as good as it smelled, I would be in for a real treat. It did not disappoint. The catfish was cooked to perfection and the greens were soaked in flavor. As delicious as it was, when my father received his breakfast platter, I thought perhaps I should have followed my initial inclination. Pork chops, fried chicken, and meatloaf among other dishes make it a difficult menu to choose from for those who love Southern cuisine.
I would recommend the Crescent Inn to anyone in the area who appreciates traditional country cooking in a down-home and friendly environment. The ambience, food, and service will leave you thoroughly satisfied. Come check the place out from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
