The Magic of Harry Potter Comes to Scottsville
Saturday Oct. 29, saw Scottsville hold their third annual Harry Potter Halloween on Valley Street, from noon to 10 p.m. The entire street was turned into Hogsmeade from the Harry Potter series. Local business also got involved with this event such as Om Tattoo & Massage being turned into Ollivander’s Wand Shop and Crust & Crumb Bakery being turned into Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop.
Valley Street was a bustling environment filled with people both young and old dressed up as witches, wizards, their favorite Harry Potter character, or even a costume that had nothing to do with the Harry Potter series. Some people even dressed up their pets for the occasion. You could tell that people at the event were having a great time as they were shouting out spells like “Expelliarmus,” and had a smile on their faces.
Valley Street was also filled with decorations such as spiders, owls, and clever signs referencing the Harry Potter series that included The Daily Prophet and wanted signs of Bellatrix Lestrange and Sirius Black.
Every store had something interesting to see. Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop sold Harry Potter themed food, such as Sugar Scrub Potions, and showed a screening of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Another neat attraction was GladRags WizardWear which was filled with many Harry Potter themed decorations.
The most popular attraction was Ollivander’s Wand Shop. There was a huge line to get into the shop that slowly grew as the event went on. This led to one of the more humorous moments at the event, as someone dressed up as the pompous Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets interacted with people in line. This involved promoting his fictional book, taking pictures with people in the line, and even signing Harry Potter books.
