SOAR-ing into the Fall Semester
Deadra Miller, staff writer
SOAR stands for student orientation, advising, and registration. The SOAR sessions are set up by the Student Success Office in coordination with Career Services, Financial Aid,Veterans Services, and the Admissions and Advising Office. SOAR is required for new students so they can get advising and set up classes for the upcoming fall semester.
However, SOAR sessions are not all listening and paperwork; they have some creative aspects as well.
This year, the sessions included an escape room where, “prospective students get to put their team building skills to work while getting them excited about coming here to PVCC,” said David Lerman, director of student success and retention. The sessions also help students make an easier transition from high school to college through the advice from faculty and student ambassadors.
The SOAR sessions change yearly. I went through SOAR, the session was not nearly as engaging. Director of Advising and Transfer Kemper Steele and his team of advisors in the Admissions and Advising Office have worked with others on campus to create an enjoyable and useful SOAR session in order to make the process of registering for classes as fun and painless as possible.
If you need help getting registered for classes or have any questions, stop by the Admissions and Advising Office, Room M144, or the Student Success Office, Room M132.
